Rescreening Window Frames

Rescreening Window screens
Rescreening Window screens

If insects are invading your home, it could be that your window screens are in need of repair. If the screen frame, usually made of wood or metal, is in good shape there is no need for replacement of the entire frame, simply rescreen the frame.

When rescreening, instead of using ordinary metal or vinyl material, consider a dense vinyl mesh. This material will not only keep out bugs but will also prevent a significant amount of heat from the sun from entering your home.

An average-size screen will take only about 15 minutes for a do-it-yourselfer, with a cost under $5.

For a screen with an aluminum frame, you’ll need a pair of needle-nose pliers, a razor knife with a sharp blade and a spline installation tool or spline roller, which looks like a pizza cutter.

In most aluminum-framed screens, the screen material is held in place by a vinyl bead called spline which is inserted into a channel that runs the entire perimeter of the frame. You need to remove the spline in order to remove the old screen material and install the new screen material. Use the needle-nose pliers to grasp one end of the spline, usually found at a corner, and peel it back until reaching the other end. The spline generally is installed in one piece, but due to aging may have to be removed in pieces. Once the spline has been removed, simply peel back the old screen and dispose of it and the spline.

To install the new screen, cut a piece of vinyl screen material approximately two or three inches longer than the frame in both directions. Next lay the screen over the frame and, starting at a corner, insert one end of the new spline into the channel. Once the spline has been started with a steady downward pressure use the spline roller to pack the remaining spline in one continuous piece around the entire perimeter of the frame.

When you reach the corner where you began, use a razor knife to carefully trim any excess spline. Again, with the razor knife, trim the excess screen material at the joint where the spline meets the aluminum frame.

The process for wood is much the same, with a few exceptions. First, while some wood frames have channels like aluminum ones, others do not. Those with channels are handled much like their aluminum counterparts, generally with the addition of a small piece of wood trim to conceal the channel.

Wood frames with no channel rely on staples rather than spline for strength. Once the screen material is stapled into place at the perimeter, the staples should be concealed with a small piece of wood trim. After installing the trim with small finish nails, use a razor knife to trim the excess.

Aluminum and Vinyl Windows

There are hundreds of window manufacturers and just about an equal amount of ways to take screens on and off of them.  My best advice is when dealing with a window that is a vinyl or aluminum the screen will usually come out from the inside, that is you must:

  1. Push the screen frame towards the center of the encasement
  2. Try to push frame up and down to try and make it come loose
  3. Pull in gently from the bottom and that should work.

Dirt and debris will lock screen frame in place, so a good ideal is to use some WD-40 spray in between the screen frame and the window frame to try and make it come loose.

Wood Windows

When your window encasement’s are wood, for example a double-hung window, then putting a screen on and off should be a bit easier.  Wood window usually have hardware on the top and bottom to hold the screen in place, they are called the top jiffy hangers and bottom bail latch.  To put the screen on and if you do have the hardware I just mentioned you have to:

  1. Insert the screen frame in the top jiffy hangers first evenly
  2. once you inserted the screen in the top hardware, push up and make sure the frame is snug
  3. Push frame in from the bottom till it’s flush
  4. Clip in the bottom bail latch and your done

Patio Screen Doors

Roll form sliding screen doors

Extruded aluminum sliding screen doors

The best sliding screen door for a lot of traffic is the Extruded aluminum sliding screen door, It is heavy duty and extremely sturdy.  You can also get this door in a few different finishes and make sure that it is a baked enamel finish so you can make sure that it will last you for years without chipping or fading.  you can ad a pet door which will protect the bottom portion of the screen from tearing.  this is called a pet protector or pet grille.  Make sure the sliding screen door comes with all metal parts, especially the rollers, handle and lock latch.  One of the key things to look out for is metal ball bearing rollers and a thick frame gauge, if you have this you should be O.K.  We install Retractable screens in the following areas, Los Angeles County, Ventura County, Simi Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, San Fernando Valley

Avoid Roll form sliding screen doors like the plague, they will only frustrate you every time you have to open them.  I do not recommend buying these light weight usually made out of tin or steal screen doors.

Some patio screen doors may need a pet guard grille

The screen protector is a must with kid’s and pet’s.  We are in business thanks to children and pet’s they are the number one cause for screens breaking and tearing.  One way to help keep your screens lasting longer is the screen protector or what some people call the pet grille.  They are good for swinging screen doors and sliding screen doors only.  They get installed on the outside of the screen frame and are held on by four screws on the four corners.  There are two kind of screen protectors, one is thin, light weight, rattles and usually is very warped.  The other type is thicker, heavier, does not rattle and is pretty straight.  Another way to tell them apart is the one that rattles is spray painted and is usually all scratched and the other better quality screen protector’s finish is baked enamel which always looks like it’s in new condition.  these can be installed by a handyman or a screen company will do it.
